Why?

"Richest 2% own 'half the wealth'", BBC News (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6211250.stm)

Found this article in the news today, and can't help but feel a sense of bitterness. Not so much towards my own circumstance or that of any person I know, but towards life itself... Why is this world so messed up?

Why do assholes drive Ferrari's and go home with ridiculously hot women? Why does a schoolteacher earn such a pathetic salary? Why do rap stars get fabulously rich for teaching the next generation that success is about "pimping" and violence? Why do soldiers in Rwanda use women and children as human shields? Why do parents in China drown their little girls just so they can have fat-ass, spoiled little boys? Why does being a slut make Paris Hilton so popular? Why do the richest of the rich want to get richer through accounting fraud, embezzlement and insider trading? Why do fanatics bomb innocent people during mid-day in an Iraqi marketplace? Why do husbands beat their wives? Why do Canadians receive in welfare more than what most citizens in the world receive as full-time income? Why do nice guys finish last?

Why!?!

And what is our appropriate response?

rmb

Two dollars.

In Toronto, that's just enough to buy a bus ticket.  Or perhaps a large fry at McDonalds...

In China, two bucks gets you 16 rmb at the local bank.  That's enough for two bottles of beer, fish soup, stinky tofu, fish filet, a chicken platter, and two vegetarian dishes.  Yes, taxes are included, and tip is not necessary.  And as for that bus ride home?  Thirteen Canadian pennies will cover it.

Can someone please tell me why purchasing power parity doesn't apply?  And while you're at it, can you also tell me why the world is so messed up?

Ce suo

The last time someone taught me how to go to bathroom, I was three years old.  And yet, 24 years later, on arrival in Kunming, I walk into this small room with a little hole in the ground, and had no idea what to do...  Do I squat?  Do I stand?  How to you flush?  I guess you don't.

Thankfully, my new friend, ZM, gave me a little demonstration...

Asian Invasion

It's been nearly a year since my last entry, but I guess there's no better time to update than now.  First year of medical school was wonderful.  I have never worked so hard and had so much fun all at the same time.  I used to wonder a lot about whether I made the right decision to go back to school.  Now, all I wonder about is what wonderful adventures lie ahead...

Speaking of adventures, I will be spending this summer in Asia.  I left Toronto last week and spent a couple days in Korea to visit H. Kim and her family.  Now I am in Kunming for the next month for a research project.  After that will be a tour of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Xian, Chengdu and Macao.... and then back to Korea to say hi to H. Kim's family again...  To my friends in these cities, please get in touch with me... would love to catch up!

some insights from a good friend...  is it true?

"you are the alpha male with feminine sensibilities... this is currently very trendy, you are the metrosexual without the shopping and manicure addiction"
